National Grid Alliance 2006/Ongoing

LPA is associated with the National Grid South West Alliance, and its role in this Alliance is to provide engineering services for scheme design & development, protection and design assurance. All the alliance member companies work together as a seamless team.


EDF Energy – London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 Project - 2001/Ongoing

Distribution system conceptual & outline design, specifications, bid reviews and approval of contractor designs. Substations and cable systems were designed and also managed design delivery.


Allington– 2002/Ongoing

Allington is a waste to generation plant in Kent rated at 43 MW and capable of burning and re-cycling 530 000 t/yr of municipal waste. LPA engineers were involved with design concept, preparing specifications, and the review of turnkey contractors design.


Puttalam Power Plant, Sri Lanka– 2002/Ongoing

Owner's Engineer services with the scope covering from site feasibility, to design review and up to final commissioning of the 300 MW coal fired plant. Both the auxiliary supply system and the grid connection were considered.


National Grid – Power System Planning Work – 2006/Ongoing


National Grid commissioned London Power Associates to help carry out planning work on specific schemes throughout the UK . System planning work was carried out using Loadflow and short circuit studies. Scheme teams were formed and proposed designs were vetted against the relevant security planning standards.


ESB Transmission System Planning, Ireland – 2003/ Ongoing


Since the restructuring of the Ireland 's electricity supply industry there has been an increase of applications by large consumers and IPP generators. LPA planned the transmission system for new load and generation connections.

Ca Mau – 2003

Conceptual design and specification of auxiliary supplies and 220 kV grid connection for a 720 MW CCGT for Petroleum Vietnam being constructed in the Mekong Delta Region.


Thanet Earth 2007-2008

Owner's Engineer to design and deliver the complete electrical network solution for the site, and network connection with the DNO. Project Thanet Earth involves a grid connection at 132 kV, and private network consisting of an 11 kV substation and cable distribution to eight individual greenhouses with firm grid capacity of 35 MVA.


Transco- Security and Planning Standards, Western Europe – 2001/2002

Reviewed existing security planning standards and drafted new standards that were more appropriate for the restructured electricity industry and accommodated significant load growth.


EDF Energy Powerlink – London Underground, 2004 - 2007

Designed the future power system including new grid intake and designed mitigation measures for harmonics and voltage fluctuations. Also produced conceptual designs and undertook equipment approvals and earthing system design reviews.


Sultanate of Oman – Regulatory Review - 2007

Review of regulatory reforms for the electricity sector in Oman prior to its privatisation. The commission covered generation, transmission and distribution. The review covered items such as security of supply, planning methodology, demand forecasting, economic despatch of generation, loss optimisation and network constraints.


Rayleigh 132 kV Rationalisation, EDF Energy – 2006/7

Project involves complete rationalisation of the 132 kV system around Rayleigh. System development included a new GIS substation near the NG site and reconfiguration of the existing (local) 132 kV substation and the dismantling and rerouting of existing 132 kV overhead lines.  LPA provided design and project management services.


London Underground 2004 - 2006

LPA staff were integrated within the LUL Project Delivery Team. They were responsible for the delivery of several major projects from inception to completion.

Oil Refinery in the UK- Supply System Review & Design – 2001

LPA redesigned the current site supplies that were derived from a single 11 kV feeder and on-site generation. The new design introduced 33 kV and enabled the proposed increase in demand of 100 MVA from a new 400 kV source associated with CONOCO's nearby CHP power station.


Network Rail - Harmonic Study – 2004

Harmonic study to quantify the effect of increased power demand and rectifier load caused by the introduction of new rolling stock. The study investigated the need for harmonic mitigation measures at several 33 kV and 66 kV grid intakes.


Moldova - 2003

LPA conducted due diligence of the two northern electricity distribution companies prior to privatisation. Capex stream was devised to the horizon year to include in the financial model.


Western Power Distribution, Radstock MSC - 2006

System studies for the reactive compensation equipment at Radstock 132/33 kV grid supply point. Investigated options and performed system analysis studies to determine size of MSC. Found solutions to harmonic distortion and resonance effects.


Gatwick Airport , EDF Energy  – 2005/ 2006

By using computer modelling techniques, reviewed the protection grading of the high voltage network. Load flow and fault level studies were conducted and revised relay settings determined.

Stanstead Airport , EDF Energy – 2005/ 2006

PyReco Generation Connection Feasibility - 2007

The PYReco pyrolysis plant is designed to turn waste tyres into a high energy fuel product, with the waste heat being used to provide steam for an 8 MW electricity generator. Completed a f easibility study for the 11 kV grid connection options for the proposed generator.


ESB Wind Generation Grid Code Review, Ireland - 2004

ESB National Grid developed a draft grid code specific to wind farm integration in readiness for future projects. It addressed fault ride through, frequency and reactive power and voltage regulation. LPA was commissioned to review the code.

Comparison of DigSILENT Power Factory Software with its existing operating software to assess suitability for NG requirements.

ELL - Harmonic Penetration Study 2007-2008

Harmonic study to assess the effect changes would have on the harmonic levels present at the local electricity utility (DNO) connection points and other relevant substations. If required, mitigation measures were to be designed.


BP Power Station Grid Connection in Wales , BP - 2006

Reviewed a report by another consultancy on grid connection options for a power station sized between 500 MW and above. Also devised new options for both 275 kV and 400 kV; BP have taken forward one of these options for the next stage of development.


BP Nerefco Wind Project-2001

LPA carried out integration studies for the connection of 9 x 2.5 MW wind turbines at the Nerefco Oil Refinery in Holland .


Wind Farm in Wales , WaveCrest Capital - 2006

LPA developed grid connection options at 33 kV for a proposed 20 MW wind farm in North Wales . This study required liaison with the DNO namely Scottish Power.


Wind Farm in North Wales, Transmission Line Diversion - 2002

An offshore wind farm in North Wales required a new grid connection. LPA designed the diversions necessary for the 400 kV overhead line.


Norfolk Coast Wind Park Grid Connection, EDF Energy - 2006

System studies to plan a 132 kV grid connection for an off-shore 300 MW wind park. Studies included power flows, short circuit and harmonic analysis.


BP Isle of Grain Wind Farm - 2004-2006

Feasibility study for the 11 kV and 33 kV grid connection of a proposed 30 MW wind farm. With environmental constraints the wind farm size was reduced by almost 50%.


ABB-Ravensthorpe Power Station Integration - 2001

Produced a summary report for ABB who had planned to develop a 440 MW CCGT at Ravensthorpe, which required a 132 kV connection. The report described the project status and included fault levels, routing of overhead lines, protection and control, section 37 issues and wayleaves.

Hot Site Earthing Calculations - 2007

LPA conducted calculations to determine if a new substation installation would be considered a hot site, with the end client having specified a 430 V rise as the maximum allowable, and in accordance with BS and ENA technical specifications.

Dimlington Generation Feasibility Study - 2005

Feasibility study for the grid connection of a proposed 40 MW or 12 MW generator, using condensate as a by-product of their main operations.


Buckinghamshire Generation Feasibility Study - 2007

Feasibility study for the connection of a 40 MW waste-to-energy generator to the grid, including the investigation of 132 kV and 33 kV grid connection options.


ShipCo Power Barge-2007

ShipCo Powership will consist of an offshore waste-to-energy plant which will generate approximately 45 MW from a single steam turbine generator with steam raised by waste incineration. LPA report addressed number of issues such as voltage level, power barge connection with mainland power system, frequency of the power system.


Derbyshire Energy from Waste plant-2007

Energy from waste (EfW) has the benefits of heat and power generation, as well as almost complete materials re-use potential. LPA performed a feasibility study to determine the options available for the connection of the 25MW generator to the local electricity utilitie's (DNO) system.


BP- Al Rayyan Power Supplies – 2001/2002

Review of contractor's design for the power supplies for Al Rayyan's Permanent Production Platform, currently derived from Qatar Petroleum's North Field Alpha Facility via a 33 kV, 41 km submarine cable. This included a comparison study for possible on board generation as a possible alternative.


BP- Caspian Power Options – 2001

LPA devised and studied the electrical supply configuration options for Caspian Sea oil operations. Options included on board generation and offshore connections, compact HVDC equipment and DC subsea cable.


British Gas / Centrica Kings Lynn PS Fault Levels Study – 2001/2002

Determination of the necessary parameters to satisfy the requirements of Schedule 14 of the connection agreement for Kings Lynn Power Station with National Grid. This included calculation of fault levels using IPSA software.

CONOCO Immingham CHP Station Integration - 2001

Appraised National Grid proposal for Grid connection of phase one  (700 MW) CHP scheme at CONOCO's Humber refinery.  Also helped to devise scheme for developing the 132 kV system for supplying local industry including Humber Oil Refinery.


Dalkia- Beverages Plant in Western Europe - 2001

Study of disruption to production due to fault events and supply interruptions  at a beverages plant.  Options such as: New grid supplies at 110 kV, LV site interconnections, installation of a Dynamic Voltage Restorer at 20 kV, installation of a CHP plant and UPS systems around the site were considered to improve reliability and maintainability.


IUSFirst- Three Bridges(NWR Southern PSU) – 2003/2004

As part of a large project team, LPA staff held responsibility for the design verification, equipment location, integration of new equipment including SCADA, signalling power supplies, cable routes and crossings, management of the civil contractor and submission of initial and detailed drawings.


ADB for East Timor – 2003

A master plan study for East Timor which had a poor distribution system. The work was performed in conjunction with Ekono-Electrowatt for designing the new network complete with future expansion and added generation.


Hydroelectric-Excitation Refurbishment - 2001/Ongoing

Prepared technical specifications for the replacement of generator excitation systems for a client in Western Europe who owns a hydro scheme built in the 1960's.


Haliburton – Caspian Sea Development Transformer Inrush Study - 2003

Study of an off-shore oil production facility to analyse power quality when feeding the central generating platform from satellite platforms. This required modelling of the effects of inrush and reverse power flow through the transformers.


Intervex Russia to Turkey HVDC Interconnector - 2001

Feasibility study for a proposed HVDC 1000 MW link between Russia and Turkey . The study considered available technology, use of Mass Impregnated Non Draining cables submerged 2000 m below the sea and transmission reinforcements in both countries.


Karratha 2, Shell's Woodside LNG Plant in Australia - 2004

Performed a design review of the existing systems so that a 60 MW increase in power demand could be achieved. This included compatibility of new equipment with the existing electrical apparatus and plant.


Ghana- Appraisal of PPP Projects 2005

LPA was a part of a team that investigated the existing and future requirements for Ghana 's electricity supply system.

Due Diligence of a Railway Electrical Contractor for Network Rail - 2004

Carried out due diligence of a certified and approved Network Rail Contractor with particular focus on track isolation activities.


Grid Supplies to a Pharmaceutical Company, UK –2001/2003

A large pharmaceutical plant and an adjacent chemicals plant both relied on a common connection to the local area network. The pharmaceutical business was growing rapidly and required a separate and secure supply. LPA devised several grid connection options and provided support during project stage with specifications, protection and equipment selection.


Plant Failure Investigations - Ongoing

LPA provides to BP on a worldwide basis a service to carryout HV rotating plant fault investigations involving diagnostic testing of insulation, supervision of repair, specification and witness of testing including acceptance.
