Project Summary

As part of the Private Finance Initiative to bring private investment into the London Underground System EDF Energy Powerlink have been given a thirty year contract to supply the electrical requirements of the underground system.

The Energy Contracts Management Team manages variations arising from any increases in power demands. These demands normally arise from requests submitted by one of three infrastructure companies (Infracos). These variations result in additional works such as provision of new transformer rooms for station domestic supplies and new traction substations to support increase in rolling stock. Any required cable diversions are also handled as variations these often involve third parties.

These variations include the Major Power Works project which involves substantial upgrades of the existing traction power systems to allow the introduction of new rolling stock over the next six years. The Energy Contracts Management Team ensures that such variations are delivered on time and to budget by EDF Powerlink with LPA managing them from inception to delivery.

LPA were engaged by London Underground Ltd to provide project management consultancy services to manage these variations. Work managed by LPA to date includes:

Extensive cable diversions to enable the construction of the new Chiltern Railways Train Care Depot at Wembley Stadium.
Cable Diversions to facilitate the construction of a new Pedestrian footbridge to access the new Wembley stadium at Wembley Stadium Station
Provision of a new transformer room at Piccadilly Circus to allow for escalator and station upgrades
Investigation into a new Traction Substation to feed the Waterloo & City line
Assistance in equipment procurement and achievement of value for money for the Major Power Works project.
